Excel stripped the zeros from my zip codes. What do I do?

When you open a CSV file with zip code data in Excel, the leading "0" can be dropped if the field has not been formatted correctly.

How to format a zip code field in Excel 2007 & 2010

1.  Select the entire column that contains the zip code fields.

2.  Under the Home tab, in the Number box, click the data format pull-down menu (the default is "General"), select More Number Formats...

3.  In the Format Cells window, select the Category named Special and choose the Type named Zip Code or Zip Code + 4.

4.  Click OK. All zip codes should now display correctly.

How to format a zip code field in Excel 2003

  1. Select the entire column that contains the zip code fields.
  2. From Format, choose Cells.
  3. On the Number tab (default is "General"), select Special.
  4. Type appears with Zip Code already highlighted; click OK.
  5. All zip codes should now display correctly.
